Tourism Business Information Kit

The Tourism industry plays a crucial role in the Northern Territory economy, contributing high levels of both Gross State Product (4.5% in 2004-05) and employment (around 8000 people were directly employed in 2004-05 and many more jobs are dependent on tourism).

The Tourism industry is represented at all levels of government:

• Australian Level - Tourism Australia is the Australian Government statutory authority responsible for international and domestic tourism marketing as well as the delivery of research and forecasts for the sector.
• Territory Level - Tourism NT is the government agency responsible for guiding tourism development and promotion in the Northern Territory. It is part of the Department of Business, Economic and Regional Development.
• Regional Level - The four Regional Tourism Associations play a key role in coordinating the efforts of industry, local government and the community.
• Local Level - Local Tourism Bodies (Tourist Information Centres) and local government bodies are responsible for promoting their local area and driving or participating in local tourism development initiatives.
